Research with OPNET:

Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation for Packet Transmission on the WCDMA Air Interface

This project will develop advanced bandwidth allocation strategies to transmit bursty traffic sources on the WCDMA air interface. WCDMA standard has been developed to support both circuit switched and packet switched traffic using various transmission channels such as DCH, RACH, FACH and CPCH. This project will concentrate on the DCH channel packet transmission algorithms.

OPNET will be used extensively to simulate different bandwidth allocation algorithms on the DCH channel . The project is supported by a University of Newcastle research scholarship.

Adaptive ARQ Techniques to Enhance the Throughput & QoS of IEEE802.11x Wireless LANs

This project is researching the development of an adaptive ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) technique for the IEEE802.11 WLAN standards. Current ARQ algorithm is very inefficient and don’t address the needs of multimedia traffic sources. We are developing new ARQ algorithm for multimedia traffic.

We are using the OPNET modeler to develop comprehensive simulation models. The project is supported by a School of EE&CS research scholarship.

Development of Vertical Handover Algorithms in a Heterogeneous Network

This project is involved in studying handover algorithms in a heterogeneous network. Currently we are studying a QoS based multivariable vertical handover algorithm. The project is using the OPNET modeler to develop a multi access point/base station based heterogeneous network simulation model.

Comparative Study of an ATM and an All-IP based RAN Architecture for the UTRAN

This project is studying the performance of an ATM based UTRAN for multimedia traffic using the OPNET modeler. The project will further develop an all IP network architecture to study the performance of the UTRAN using multimedia traffic generators.

Teaching

ELEC3500 Telecommunications Networks

Topics: Communication protocols and architectures, Data communication interface, multiplexers, circuit and packet switching techniques, Error and flow control mechanisms, LAN technology and systems, Routing techniques, Transport protocols, TCP, UDP, IP, Wide area networks, ATM, Frame relay.

OPNET Modeler used for laboratory work for the above subject. Students  learns the use of OPNET modeler for network simulation and performance assessments. Laboratory work includes simulation of an Ethernet and a Token ring LAN, routing protocols and analyses the performance of error correction techniques.

ELEC4890 Telecommunications Engineering Projects

A range of full year undergraduate projects use theOPNET to simulate various network architecture, protocols, systems and applications.
